“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.” To this day, especially in times of “disaster,” I remember my mother’s words and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers – so many caring people in this world.

I am brought to my knees in sadness with the loss of those sweet, innocent children. I know that we are all still reeling from the abhorrent event in Connecticut.

I am trying to find solace in Mama Rogers’  advice though. This Sunday, I am looking at the helpers- the first-responders, the counselors, the community of Newton. I am humbled by the heroic actions of those teachers who gave their lives for the children. I am comforted in the knowledge that good does outweigh bad and that the world is full of caring, compassionate people.

Thank you, helpers.
